Brief engagement with a US-based enterprise security company, integrating a new video feed vendor into their Vue.js platform - an early exposure to security hardware integration that would inform later work at Operational Solutions.
Key Highlights
- Integrated new video feed vendor into US enterprise security platform
- Vue.js frontend development with usability enhancements
- Enterprise-scale team structure (US company, Wales-based development)
- Early exposure to security hardware integration patterns (later applied at Operational Solutions)
- Career insight: confirmed that enterprise scale doesn't guarantee engaging work
About the Engagement
SureView Systems is a US-based enterprise company providing asset and building security systems across multiple industries. Despite being headquartered in the US, their development team was based in Wales (Swansea area), and they engaged me through a recruiter for what became a brief one-month engagement.
The technical work involved integrating a new video feed vendor into their existing platform - primarily Vue.js frontend work to display the feeds and implement usability improvements. Unlike my later work at Operational Solutions where I had physical sensor equipment on my desk, SureView's hardware was emulated for development purposes, which made the integration somewhat abstract.
The engagement ended after roughly a month. I was balancing this alongside Holiday Caravans Direct, which had started becoming more demanding again. When forced to choose, I chose to focus on Holiday Caravans - despite its lower rate at the time - because SureView simply didn't engage me. It was technically competent work for a large enterprise, but it lacked the challenge or interest that keeps me motivated. In retrospect, this was another data point (like Greggs later) in understanding that enterprise scale alone doesn't guarantee engaging work.
The team structure was enterprise-scale, similar to Lyons Davidson - multiple development teams with significant business resources around the product. The integration itself was successful, but I departed before taking on additional work.
